Many Left 4 Dead 2 Users are facing CTD problem. It occurs when you launch the game, once the intro is complete the game crashes to desktop. Below is the fix for the same.

How to Fix Left 4 Dead 2 CTD (Crash to Desktop)

  1. Navigate to your windows folder (usually c:/windows/)
  2. Inside there, goto the CSC folder
  3. Try to open the folder and it should fail (if it doesn’t, you have a different problem). It’ll come up with ‘You don’t currently have permission to access this folder’ at which time you keep pressing continue until it says you’ve been denied.
  4. Right-click the folder, go to properties.
  5. Go to the security tab at which point it’ll say ‘To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object’s security properties’ at which point you click continue.
  6. Click on admin in the owner tab which will swap the owner to the administrator then click OK.
  7. You then click on OK once again which will bring up the security tab.
  8. Tick ‘full control’, press OK twice to get out of the properties tabs.
  9. Run the game.

I tried this but it didn’t really help my CTD problem. If you know a fix for why it crashes while loading the campaign that would be absolutely appreciated.

NO I’M NOT RETARD. And the only folder in my windows directory that starts on a C is the Cursors folder…

So wtf is that CSC folder anyway?

Im not sure which OS have a CSC folder, i’m postive XP does not. I have Vista Ultimate and have one. So… you may just have to find another way to fix it.

Hey, I found a fix for the issue of CTD immediately after the intro video. FYI, I purchased my copy of the game from Dell.

1) In steam, right click Left 4 Dead 2 and click “delete local content.” Confirm.
2) Re-install the game.
3)?
4)It works so far.
5) Dinner.

Yeah, thanks pritam. That’s the trick to get CSC showing (in my xp 32bit, not so much on vista 32).

Hey , i have an idea!
First. Just Shortcut your left4dead2.exe (or Launcher) to desktop.
Second. Click Mouse2 then Properties (You can see Target)
Third. Then add This -lv (it’s like a parameter)
It’s too easy , and works for me :)

After executing pritam’s fix I can see CSC. But I am not denied when I try to open it (step 3) and I do not see a “security” tab (step 5). Any ideas?

Lennox. In the target field, I initially see: “C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -applaunch 550

I modified to: “C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -applaunch 550 -lv

That didn’t help. Or did I misunderstand your fix?

@Lennox: This disables gore in-game? Isn’t there another way to solve it, without disabling this effect?

@pritam: I don’t really get how to change the way users log on and off. I have navigated to the user accounts folder, however after that I am stuck. Help?
I am really fed up of the crashes, soon I will consider buying the game instead, so please help me!

I believe that Windows XP Home edition does not have Client Side Cache and so, will not have a CSC folder.
